The Beautiful Part of Writing--#WIPMADNESS Check-In

Could you imagine if you had one shot at getting your novel right? The thought makes me shudder. As I'm plugging away at this current revision, one thing that relieves the pressure is knowing that I'll be able to revise it as many times as needed. Phew!

This past week I read this scary yet motivating article about how sitting all day is damaging your body. And so I started a new habit: drinking lots of water while revising and using the first floor toity so I get plenty of trips up and down the stairs. So far, so good.

The Most Interesting Thing--How Deep Do You Dig?

This week I've been digging away, searching for the hard rock of my characters' emotional truths. I'm getting closer, but they're still not being totally honest with me. Some hard layers still stand in the way. I need that jackhammer, an effective tool, but one that shakes the operator to the core.

Yes. I'm going to dig deep. And it's going to take an emotional toll on me. Am I ready? Am I prepared to blast my way through my rawest emotions? I hope so.

Is Your Story Raining On Your Readers? #WIPMADNESS Week 3

Lately I've been thinking a lot about the elements of a good story. What makes me remember one novel a year later as opposed to the one I read last month about which I can't recall a thing? Sensory details. The feelings and sensations the story arouses in my heart, mind, and gut.

Have you ever read a story that makes your heart race and your skin crawl? Off the top of my head, I can think of one such novel--DIRTY LITTLE SECRETS by CJ Omololu.

That's the way I want to write this novel. I want readers to feel like they've experienced life in Occupied Paris. Tasted it. Touched it. Lived it. Perhaps it will take years to get my story to that point, but I will not be satisfied with anything less.

Have You Sailed Away From Your Safe Harbor? #WIPMADNESS Check-In

The moment I decided to write historical fiction, I left my safe contemporary harbor and moved into the rough waters of World War II France. From the moment I set sail, the voyage became one of exploration and discovery. But the dream sometimes becomes a nightmare. Like it did last Friday when I thought I'd made one HUGE historical error which would cause the entire story to collapse.

After I clawed my way out of the pit of despair, I remembered my source and breathed a huge sigh of relief. Having weathered that research storm and many others, I continue to move forward. Saturday I reached the 1/4 of the way mark. Yay!!!

The Most Interesting Thing: Research--How Much Is Enough?

When the idea for a story set in Occupied Paris first hit me four years ago, I didn't think about research. I only thought about how much fun it would be to write a young adult novel set in that particular place and time.

Before I started writing the first draft, I spent three years reading everything I could get my hands on that had to do with life in Paris during the war. I kept a notebook and jotted down interesting bits and significant dates and other random stuff. While writing the first draft, I did not refer to my research notes. Instead, I worked on crafting the story without worrying too much about the details. But I did make about 100 notes on the draft: RESEARCH THIS!

As a huge fan of historical fiction, it's important to me that an author has done the research. But sometimes an author will include a note to readers in the back of the book that explains where the author has "deviated" for the sake of the story. That doesn't bother me.

Now that I'm revising the novel, I find that I can search for an answer to one of those questions for hours and still come up empty. At that point, I have to change direction and come at it from a different angle. Though I love doing research, sometimes I wonder, how much is enough? When writing historical fiction, must I stick 100% to historical accuracy and check every minute detail?

Palimpsest. It means something that has been erased and written upon again in layers of history and meaning. It appears in Tell Me a Secret, but I never found a place for it in Don’t Breathe a Word.

One word that describes your path to publication:

Serendipitous. (That would be after painful, long, and persistent!)

If I could have two dream careers, I’d be an author and:
An artist. I love to paint and make collage and do crafty artsy things.

On Life:

How are you doing? I was very encouraged to read all the reasonable goals set last week and am eager to clap my hands or pat you on the back consolingly, whatever the need may be. For me this week was wrought with writing ups and downs. I am a quarter of the way through this particular revision, which puts me exactly where I want to be. But sometimes I wonder if I'm over my head. I want this novel to be both emotionally riveting and historically accurate. Have I learned my craft well enough to pull this off? I want to see this novel in print. I hope I want to enough.

The Most Intersting Thing--The Joys of Revision

But I love the process.

Love getting feedback.

Love hitting the delete button.

Love ripping apart a story, then piecing it back together.

Love focusing on every word, every sentence, every paragraph.

Love reading a manuscript out loud, red pen in hand, slashing through the printed pages.

It's Monday morning and I just realized I volunteered to take the reins for January. Do I have writing goals this month? I'm having so much fun revising the historical, I sometimes forget to eat. Outside of working on it everyday, I don't have any specific goals. Once I start, I have a terrible time tearing myself away, so I guess my goal is to make sure I don't starve to death. ^_^

While eating my way through Ray Bradbury's thought-provoking Essays on Creativity from Zen and the Art of Writing, I took to heart a suggestion about reading poetry every day. Not a difficult task for my poetry loving soul. So I've been reading two poems aloud every morning and loving it. The only challenge I face is the odd behavior my poetry reading elicits in my Persian. Something about the rhythm of the words provokes him to jump on my chest and place his furry face inches away, giving me the creepy stare. Despite my annoying cat, I feel encouraged and invigorated by my new poetry habit.

Any of you like to suggest a favorite poem or poet? Do you think reading poetry feeds the creative spirit?

We all agree that our time is precious, right? And reading blogs takes time. Commenting takes even more. Curious as to how many of the pretty faces on my sidebar used their precious time on my blatherings and would confess to it, I asked you. My unscientific experiment showed about 10%. Thank you all for helping.

Sophie Chang left an interesting comment and gave a link to three brief, but thought-provoking tips for bloggers.

I've often pondered whether blog readers return to posts to see if the author replied to their comments. Sometimes I respond to your comments, but do you ever return to read them?

In her post, Sophie discussed the concept of blogger reciprocity. Rather than responding to your comments, I would leave a comment on yours. She also raised the issue of word verification. When I removed it, I received LOADS of spam. So I put it back on. I don't like word verification. It annoys me. But it never stops me from commenting.

So what are your thoughts? Should a blogger reply to your comments on their own blog, or would you rather have them hop over to yours? Do you ever subscribe to comments or revisit blogs to read them? What about word verification? Friend or foe? What makes you stop reading a blog? Anything else you'd like to say on this subject? Now's your chance. ^_^

The Most Intersting Thing: Changing POV

Every time I begin a new novel, I write in third person POV. Sometimes I reach the end and realize the story should have been written in first. One would think that after the third time this happened, I'd learn my lesson. But no.

Why do I keep doing this? Because I don't outline. My first draft is an exploration of both story and character. By the time I finish a draft, I have a solid grip on who the MC is and what the story is about. I start hearing the voice. And sometimes that voice is screaming to be written in first person.

And honestly, I love rewriting a story from third to first, getting deep inside the MC's head and discovering what she's really thinking and how she feels about everything that's happening. What fun! Anyone else ever do this?

Have you ever revised a story from a different POV? Have you ever rewritten the story from a different character's POV? Which do you prefer writing, first or third? Past tense or present?

The Most Interesting Thing: Coping with Blog Fatigue

This week I read an interesting article on blog fatigue over at Shrinking Violets Promotions which coincided with my own feelings of blog fatigue. When I checked to see how long I've been posting here, I was surprised to see that it's been 2 1/2 years already. At the same time, the list of blogs I follow has also grown tremendously. Thankfully I got dialed into Google Reader a while back which helps. But lately my enthusiasm for blog reading has waned. I've become overwhelmed with trying to keep up with all the posts on my blogroll. And so I've been leaving fewer comments.

As for this blog, I finished the "Partners on the Path" series (love you all dearly!) and have been posting fewer author interviews. Which leaves me with this one feature, "The Most Interesting Thing". Posting once a week feels good for me.

What about you? What are your thoughts on blog fatigue? How do you manage? Any tips or suggestions? I'd love to hear from you.

The Most Interesting Thing: Pushing Our Boundaries

Have you ever felt like your writing is trapped in a hamster cage, spinning around and around in that little blue wheel, going nowhere? If so, welcome to my world. The moment I let down my guard, I find myself confined again, belly up and miserable.

How do I get out? I push the boundaries of my art. Challenge myself by writing something completely beyond my comfort zone like humorous MG, third person POV, or historical fiction.

My latest challenge came this week when my teen nephews asked me to create a murder mystery role-playing story for a family gathering in February. Murder mystery? Me? The wheels are already turning. Not that horrible hamster wheel, but the creative merry-go-round that gets me giddy with excitement.

How often have you read a fabulous book and then within a week have the chance to meet the author? These sorts of things don't happen to me. So it was with great pleasure that I got to listen to and visit briefly with Jessica Martinez at Third Place Books in Seattle earlier this month. What a lovely person. I encourage you to get yourself a copy of this book. It's one of my favorite contemporary reads of the year.

On Writing:

Favorite thing about writing a first draft:

Finishing! First drafts are torture for me. Aside from finishing though, I love the excitement of the first few chapters, when the idea is so big and wonderful, and I’m just getting to know my characters, and none of the plot-crippling flaws have bubbled up yet.

Best thing about writing for kids and/or teens:

Writing for kids is incredibly liberating. I can put aside my need to be profound and depressing, and just write good stories. (And occasionally they end up being profound anyway.)

Favorite word?:

Tip-toe. (Is that weird?)

The Most Interesting Thing--Back to Basics

What was one of the first things you learned about the craft of writing? For me it was show, don't tell. Sound familiar? Yet after years of writing, my first inclination is to tell rather than show. In fact, just this week I caught myself writing this sentence: Overwhelmed by the information I found. . . Arrgggh! Why does this happen? Because I'm a super lazy drafter. Which means I have to be an extra diligent reviser.

What helps me overcome my telling weakness? I try to picture my characters on a stage, they can't talk, but have to show me what's happening. My job is to write what I see.

What about you? Do you sometimes struggle with the basics? Any tips you want to share about recognizing and overcoming the showing/telling problem?

What resources have you found most helpful on your writing path? I find Casey McCormick's blog, Literary Rambles, extremely helpful. She posts great writing tips. The blog Query Shark by Janet Reid is another blog I find helpful. I get to see through the critical eyes of a literary agent, and I know what's in and what's out when it comes to query letter writing.
What's the most encouraging thing you've experienced along the way? One comment from a beta reader encouraged me. My librarian (and good friend) found an avid reader to critique my MS. This avid reader was a person I'd not met before, and I liked the idea of her critiquing my MS, because she could critique it and give honest feedback without carrying the guilt of hurting my feelings. In other words, she wouldn't hold any of her comments back. After she critiqued my MS, we met for the first time and sat down in the library and talked about my MS for two hours. She pointed out the elements that needed to be polished. She was critical and told it like it was. But at the end of our conversation she told me, “I want to see this book in Barnes and Nobles someday.” That meant a lot to me because, at that time, I felt like giving up on that MS and moving on to another writing project. Hearing her say that let me know not to give up just yet on it.
Favorite children's books? Authors? Ohh. . .what a tough question! I have a long list. Usually, I attempt to read books that's in the same tense I'm writing. Right now my MG MS is first person, present tense, so of course I'm gobbling up books such as THE FOREST OF HANDS AND TEETH series by Carrie Ryan, or MOCKINGBIRD by Erskine. When I wrote my SF/ urban fantasy MS, I read books such as INCARCERON by Catherine Fisher. (INCARERON has a great plot!) Books in the fantasy and science fiction genres are entertaining to read, but more and more each day I appreciate the authors who write realistic fiction. Elizabeth Scott. Jay Asher. Historical fiction is important too. THE BOOK THIEF is a book I pull out once every few months to read. It's books such as TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD by Harpee Lee that I think points people in the right direction. That's why I write—I feel as though there's stories out in the world that need to be told, and about the only way to bring it to people's attention is either by the media or by books.
What genre would you like to see become more popular in the near future? Since I'm under twenty-two, I haven't explored much in the adult books--I've kept close to YA books and sometimes MG books. I think paranormal has fizzled out--there's so many books on the shelves in that genre right now, and lately I haven't seen anything fresh. The characters and twists are usually the same. (Or at least, the books I read were like that.) I would like to see more, shall we say, urban science fiction both in MG and YA. More contemporary books would be nice. I haven't seen much historical fiction, but I would like to see more books in this genre--especially set in the Roaring Twenties.
What author (or person) do you most want to meet? I would like to meet Taylor. D. Lautner. Everyone always talks about his looks, but I would like to meet him because he seems as though he has a nice personality.
What keeps you going when you feel like giving up? I've been writing for almost seven years, and after studying and putting so many hours into learning the craft of writing, giving up just doesn't seem like an appealing option. I have come close to giving up a few times, but I keep telling myself, “I have a story to tell, a story that I want other people to hear.” If I give up, that story is only going to be known by me and a few other people (my beta readers) and that's it. I don't want that. I want many, many more people to read my stories.
If you could live any place on the planet, where would it be? There's a few places close to home that I'd like to visit. I've always been fascinated with lakes and snow, so a place like Michigan sounds like a great place to live. Even though the winters are long and cold, I heard the summers are fantastic. And all the lakes are perfect for kayaking! Also, Northern California sounds great as far as the forests. Australia? Savannah, Georgia? There's too many great places! It's hard for me to choose just one.
Describe your fantasy writing space? A small, quiet place with plenty of organization! Right now, my desk is just an old table. But I do have an ideal office in mind. Hopefully, the fantasy will become realistic someday. (Smiles.) I would like a small room, with nothing but a desk, chair, and shelf space. I would like for the walls to either be chalkboard or dry erase—that way I could write my ideas directly on the wall and erase them later.
What obstacles have you overcome in order to keep writing? Writer's block.
Best writing advice you've been given? I've been given a lot of great advice, and I'd like to share several. (Prepare yourself for a long list.) (1) Write every day, even if it's a small amount. (2) “Show” don't “tell” in your writing. (3) Use the active voice. (4) Listen to your critique partners and beta readers. If your beta reader says your characters are flat, then your characters are probably flat (despite what you tell yourself). If your beta reader or critique partner says you need to work on POV, then you probably need to work on POV. One opinion from a beta reader may be exactly that— an opinion from an individual. But if you have several people commenting on the same thing, then you need to take a closer look at the issue. You don't need to take every comment or opinion as wisdom, but it is wise to listen. (5) Read a lot. It's a good idea to read books in the same genre you're writing. When I was writing my SF book, I read a lot of SF and urban fantasy. Now that I'm writing an MG contemporary (and preparing to write an YA contemporary) I'm reading a large number of contemporary books. If you're writing a thriller, read all the thrillers you can. Watch thriller movies like the BOURNE series, or TAKEN. Carefully observe how the plot is structured. If you're writing a historical fiction, do history research and make sure your facts are correct. Perhaps watch documentaries.
What one word describes your writing process? Persistence.
What do you like to keep in mind while drafting a story? I like to think the first draft as the paint primer on a wall—it's important, but the most important details are yet to come. In my earlier (amateurish) years of writing, I stressed myself into making each purple prosed sentence, each paragraph, each chapter perfect. Biggest waste of time. I thought when I wrote “The End” at the end of a manuscript, I was done. Success! But no, the work has just started. The second draft is where I strengthen the characters and make them more unique and realistic. I make sure the plot doesn't have any pitfalls, and the chapters have good starting and ending points. The fun starts in the third draft. The third draft is where I tighten the writing (or cut out extra words) and make the passive sentences active.
How will you celebrate the publication of your first book? I'll take a month break from writing and read a lot. Then it's back to writing the next book!

The Most Interesting Thing: Food for Thought

I've been thinking a lot about food lately. Mostly because I spent the past three months in physical and emotional agony due to something I let slip into my diet--soy. Good riddance! I'm feeling much better now, thank you.

Then I noticed a lot of my writing partners talking about the benefit of food journals.

And then I got to thinking about how food comes into play in the stories we read and write. Food, or the lack thereof, has been a major issue in my last two novels. In my first novel, I had my MC enjoy all the fabulous treats that are forbidden to me. My latest character has a thing for gummy worms. I've become a gummy bird. Hmmm.

I've also noticed the effect food has on me when I'm reading novels. The mere description of Chinese food sent me racing for the phone to have my husband bring home take-out last week.

So how does food influence your writing and reading? Do you ever find yourself reaching for the foods in your stories or the stories you are reading?

If you're a regular reader of this blog, you may know that when I find a book that intrigues me and surprises me, a book I can't put down, I am compelled to let everyone know about it. This is one of those times. Thankfully, Anna Sheehan graciously responded to my request for an interview.

On Writing:
Favorite thing about writing a first draft: When the story starts to flow and seems to tell itself. Those few scenes that just fall out of you whole.
Best thing about writing for kids and/or teens: The best thing about writing for teenagers is how important anything can be in a YA novel. Since teenagers are forming their entire future selves, something as important as abuse or as trivial as an acorn can be something they accept as natural, or change their entire world view.
Favorite word? Sorcery. Something about the sibilance of the word just gives me chills.
One word that describes your path to publication: Over-dramatic!
If I could have two dream careers, I’d be an author and a: Philanthropist! Get me rich enough to be a philanthropist and I will be one with pleasure!
On Life:
If I could snap my fingers and solve one of the problems here on earth, it would be: Pollution and global warming. It affects everyone and everything. If anyone else has a different answer to that, their priorities are a little skewed.
One question I wish I had a definitive answer to: You know, I value the questions of life. There’s nothing I feel we need. Maybe "How to fix this," ("this" being whatever it needs to be) but the how will come about by trying and failing and trying again, anyway.
Best thing about being a child: Your desire and ability to play. As a child, you can play with anything. It becomes harder as you grow.
Worst thing about being a child: No one listens to you.
Best thing about being a teenager: Hm. Well, possibly the peak physical aspects, but mine were never that hot to start with, so it wasn’t MY best thing. My best thing was ... nope. Nope. Being a teenager sucked. Oh! Some of the opportunities you get which frankly just go away as you get older, unless you want to pay money through the nose.
Worst thing about being a teenager: Oh horrors! Don’t make me live that again!
Most memorable teen moment: I guess when I went to Paris. I remember that pretty well. All the other things I remember were pretty unpleasant. Even Paris was tainted – I went into anaphylactic shock just as I got back and nearly died.
One thing I’d like to say to my teen self: Hang in there. It can do nothing but get better.
A quote I live by: Always be ready to speak your mind, and a base man will avoid you. William Blake, Proverbs of Hell.
My dream vacation: Oh, probably my darling Ireland. But there’s a thousand places around the world I want to see, as well.

In My Perfect World…I’m afraid my perfect world is very predictable. I don’t consider these questions to be jokes, so I’m not going to include ice-cream, novels and Dr. Who episodes. Everyone would get accurate and relatively unbiased news and keep themselves up to date on the state of the planet at least once a week. There would be an abundance of clean water and healthy food. No one would be deprived of the beauties of nature or our valuable endangered species. Every child would have an education. No one would ever suffer abuse. Health Care would be free for everyone.

What resources have you found most helpful on your writing path?

There are so many great blogs -- author blogs, agent blogs, editor blogs, and anything by anyone who’s in the business of writing. There is a wealth of knowledge out there that’s being shared freely. My favorites are the Book View Café (http://blog.bookviewcafe.com/), the Writer Beware blog (http://accrispin.blogspot.com/), and the QueryTracker.net blog (http://querytracker.blogspot.com/)

What’s the most encouraging thing you’ve experienced along the way?

I think that the people are the most encouraging thing. There are some bad apples, naturally, but most of the folks I’ve interacted with have been nice and extremely willing to help out others.

Favorite children’s books? Authors?

My favorite children’s books are by my favorite author, Diana Wynne Jones. All of her books are fabulous, but my favorites are Howl’s Moving Castle, Dark Lord of Derkholm, and the Chrestomanci books.

What keeps you going when you feel like giving up?

I let myself imagine what it would really feel like to give up and never finish writing anything. It’s a deeply unsatisfying thought and that usually spurs me onward.

If you could choose to live any place on the planet, where would it be?

Oh, gracious, I’m going to have the most boring answer ever, but I really like where I live now (the East Coast). Sometimes I think about living some place a little more rural, but I love being only 15 minutes away from the bookstore and the library.

Describe your fantasy writing space?

Some place I can sit down! I do a lot of my writing while standing up, so I’d love to have a big comfy chair. I’d probably never get to use it, but at least it would exist!

What obstacles have you overcome in order to keep writing?

Lack of time. I really have to squeeze writing into any spare time I can scrounge up. Some days I would really rather just collapse in front of the television, but nothing will get written that way! My other biggest obstacle has been how critical I am of my writing. I’m still working on that one.

What one word describes your writing process?

Scattered.

What do you appreciate the most about being part of the children’s writers community?

The best thing has been how encouraging I’ve found other writers to be. Everyone that I met online has been so supportive, and it really helps to know that other people are cheering you on. It is definitely worth it to join a writer’s forum, follow the writing hashtags on twitter, and just get out there and meet other writers.

Best writing advice you’ve been given?

Just get it written. It can be fixed later. (Some day I will actually listen to this advice.)

What do you like to keep in mind while drafting a story?

I always try to think about the relationships between my characters. I love to read about people navigating the treacherous waters of human interaction, regardless of genre, so that’s something I really want to try to get right in my stories. It can be hard because relationships are rarely straightforward love or hate -- they’re more like tangled balls of yarn.

How will you celebrate the publication of your first book?

I honestly haven’t thought about it. It’s so far in the future! I’d probably just do something quiet and low-key with my family, maybe go out to a restaurant or have a cake or something. That sounds so dull, but it’s the truth.

What resources have you found most helpful on your writing path?

I love Twitter, honestly. #wipmadness, #amwriting—they keep me going every month. I love the encouragement and kicks-in-butt I know my fellow writers are just dying to give. I love doing the same for them, too, because this energizes me. I’ve found several betas this way, too—mutual, of course. The blogosphere, for me, goes hand-in-hand with Twitter.

Books on craft include On Writing by Stephen King, Characters and Viewpoints by Orson Scott Card, and The Art of Fiction by John Gardner. Yeah, I picked that up in one especially good MFA workshop, so it’s pretty dense.

What’s the most encouraging thing you’ve experienced along the way?

When I was a teen, my best friend’s grandpa who used to be the president of two large Florida newspapers and formerly taught at Missouri School of Journalism, read and critiqued my first complete novel. Y’all, this thing was 200K. And he did it with kindness and integrity. We wrote letters back and forth while I was in college—he offered to pay my way whenever I scraped to get by. He believed in me.

Favorite children’s books? Authors?

Chronicles of Narnia—I lived and breathed this series for years. I can quote you a whole chapter from The Silver Chair. Also, Scott O’Dells Island of the Blue Dolphins. More recently, I adored Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials and Plain Kate by Erin Bow, to name a few.

What keeps you going when you feel like giving up?

Running, writing friends who tell me I can do it, ice cream. Er. Well, and then pushing through despair until I forget it was there. Oh, and my brother, who’s an aspiring film maker living the dream out in LA—i.e. living gig to gig, hand to mouth. We shared a lot of world-making together as kids. He’s inspiring and brave.

If you could choose to live any place on the planet, where would it be?

I really can’t answer this question. The idea of living somewhere, of settling down, scares the bejeebies out of me. But I do have this dream of traveling to some place in far East Europe (or something), and living on a farm with a family I don’t know and can’t speak to because nobody for 40 miles around speaks English, and doing manual labor for room and board for 2 years. No laptop, no cell phone. Just sweat, my own thoughts, and the smell of living.

Describe your fantasy writing space?

Coffee shop with just the right amount of ambient noise. The perfect blueberry scone or zucchini muffin. The perfect cappuccino. Gorgeous wood paneling and bay windows with linen curtains. A light, chill breeze whenever the door tinkles open.

What obstacles have you overcome in order to keep writing?

Parting ways with good friends who were also crutches. That’s the biggest.

What one word describes your writing process?

Demanding

What do you appreciate the most about being part of the children’s writers community?

How amazingly kind, generous, truly well-meaning and outwardly non-competitive everyone is. I don’t have to ask twice for help, encouragements, challenges… I never imagined it’d be this way.

Best writing advice you’ve been given?

Go with your gut, but guts can be honed.

What do you like to keep in mind while drafting a story?

From scene to scene: 1. What my MC wants or needs to have happen. 2. What my Antagonist wants or needs to have happen. And 3. The ending, the feel and weight of it in my mind. That trajectory.

How will you celebrate the publication of your first book?

Probably tears, squeals, excessive dancing & prancing, lots of phone calls.

The Most Important Thing--The Value of Critique

You all should be very grateful that I made the loving decision and chose not to post a photo from my skin cancer surgery last January, even though it fit better with the quote. You're welcome.

Do you agree with Winston on this? This week I got feedback from some of my hard-working betas who care enough about my writing career to have called attention to the "unhealthy state of things" in my story. Without this sort of valuable input from others, I don't believe I would have been able to brainstorm the solutions that have made the story stronger, healthier.

Giving and receiving critique is a delicate thing. On the giving end, I've learned the importance of the critique sandwich--commend strengths, expose weaknesses, commend strengths. On the receiving end, I know to wait until my defensive spirit has died down and I can approach suggestions with an open mind.

Shari is another long-time writing buddy. I contacted her years ago when I first started my journey. Not only do we live in the same corner of the globe, but we share a lot of the same writing partners. Shari has been an encouraging part of #wipmadness for quite some time.

What resources have you found most helpful on your writing path?

My awesome critique group, “the blueboards”, and a few fave craft books. Oh! And the Surrey International Writers’ Conference (amazing!).

What’s the most encouraging thing you’ve experienced along the way?

Last fall, after parting ways with my agent, my confidence was at a low point. But then in October, I won the “Writing for Young People” category of the SiWC writing contest. The win would’ve been encouraging any time, but at that particular point in my life, it was an immense boost.

Favorite children’s books? Authors?

The Truth About Forever, by Sarah Dessen, and Looking for Alaska, by John Green, are the two books I credit with hooking me on YA lit. Now, I have a ton of faves, but the best two YAs I’ve read so far this year are How to Save a Life, by Sara Zarr, and Imaginary Girls, by Nova Ren Suma.

What keeps you going when you feel like giving up?

I’m too stubborn to give up, lol! But if I do feel like quitting someday, I expect spending time reading and writing just for the joy of it – rather than as part of a “publication journey” – would renew me.

If you could choose to live any place on the planet, where would it be?

I love where I live! First choice would always be by the ocean, and right now I’m lucky enough to live a 10-minute walk from the beach. It’s heaven.

Describe your fantasy writing space?

A room full of books and good light and a great desk, with a window overlooking the sea. But I’d settle for any dedicated writing space – I’m almost desperate enough to transform the closet under our stairs into a Potter-esque writing hideout.

What obstacles have you overcome in order to keep writing?

The biggest obstacle is that pesky way the earth keeps rotating on its axis, spinning my time away. In my non-writing life, I’m a nurse, mom of four, and pastor’s wife, so my days are full! But we fit in what’s really important to us, don’t we? (For me, that’s meant goodbye TV and hello writing-time!)

What one word describes your writing process?

Evolving.

What do you appreciate the most about being part of the children’s writers community?

The support! It’s amazing. It really feels like being part of a huge extended (and not even particularly dysfunctional) family. I love it.

Best writing advice you’ve been given?

“Some stories are like stew: the longer they simmer, the better they are.” I’m a muller, and sometimes things need to simmer for a long time. I use to struggle with feeling unproductive, thinking I needed to write every single day. Fact is, I don’t. True, I can’t let myself fall into procrastination and lack of discipline, but recognizing “mulling” as a valid part of my process has freed my creativity and restored a lot of joy to the process. (Thank you, Catherine!)

What do you like to keep in mind while drafting a story?

Something needs to happen! (I tend to be very character-focused.)

How will you celebrate the publication of your first book?

I’m not sure, but I suspect margaritas will be involved. You’re all invited.

What obstacles have you overcome in order to keep writing? Due to not previously taking care of myself properly, I’ve had to make a complete change in my lifestyle. I now have positive habits of eating the right foods for my body, getting plenty of rest, and exercising daily – even when I don’t want to.

On Writing:

Favorite thing about writing a first draft: the hopeful, delirious opening moments where a spark of an idea comes, and my fingers fly across the keys, and these gorgeous words flood across the white screen, and there’s absolutely nothing to stop me - or these words - from becoming the most brilliant thing I’ve ever written.

Which, of course, is soon followed by the realization that I have no idea what the $*&%^ I am even writing about.

Best thing about writing for kids and/or teens: getting a note that says, “I’m not really a reader, but I couldn’t put your book down.” Especially when it’s from a teen boy.

Favorite word?(no profanity please ^_^) *stares blankly at screen with all feasible options taken away* Okay, fine, I’ve always loved the word calliope. As for the words I must like because I use them too much, how about unfathomable and disconcerting. Apparently, a lot of things in my life feel unfathomable and disconcerting. And of course, the best word there is: water. Liquid. Waves. Give me water or give me death. *reads it over. Rolls eyes. Leaves it anyway.*

One word that describes your path to publication: (unfathomably, disconcertingly) LONG. ;)

If I could have two dream careers, I’d be an author and an: Olympic swimmer or diver. I probably would have liked to have been an actor too. I acted as a kid. I’m very dramatic. ;)

On Life:

If I could snap my fingers and solve one of the problems here on earth, it would be: Can I snap and get three more solutions? ;) Oh, man, this question is too hard. I hate human suffering. I hate it worse when children suffer. I’d solve every problem there is that leads to humans – and especially children – suffering.

Best thing about being a child: Everything still being possible.

Worst thing about being a child: The world feeling big and overwhelming.

Best thing about being a teenager: That sense of immortality/fearlessness that comes from hormones mixing with not knowing too much, and not caring about what you do know if it’s not serving your needs at the moment.

Worst thing about being a teenager: Not being comfortable in your own skin.

Most memorable teen moment: I have a few. One is my first real (tongue) kiss, which was actually a really weird situation… *doesn’t tell that story.* Another was senior year when my BFF and I had a secret sleepover *coughs* with our boyfriends at one of their houses, and the whole football team showed up outside on the lawn hootin’ and hollerin.’ Yeah, that was pretty.

One thing I’d like to say to my teen self: I know it’s trite, but it’s true: be who you are. **** anyone who doesn’t like you for it. Especially if who you are is a smart, kind, funny, gentle, good person who doesn’t want to do stupid things. ;)

A quote I live by: I have a few mantras. Here are two: writer-success-wise, “Keep your eyes on your own paper.” Life-wise, “Feel the fear and do it anyway.”

My dream vacation: The hotel San Pietro, Italy, or an Alaskan cruise.

In My Perfect World…

Everyone would get a massage and fresh flowers at least once a week.

There would be an abundance of silliness and ridiculous, uncontrollable laughing. Also, water.

No one would be deprived of affection and human connection.

Every child would have unconditional love.

The blogosphere is the most helpful place I’ve found when it comes to writing. There are so many other writers with advice, support, and who already know the ups and downs of the road.

What’s the most encouraging thing you’ve experienced along the way?

That almost all writers go through a process; many authors have written several novels before they were published, they’ve made mistakes, received a ton of rejection letters—but still achieved their dream of seeing their story in the hands of readers.

Favorite children’s books? Authors?

Oh, there are so many books. :) But some of my favorite authors are Blue Balliet, Eoin Colfer, Diana Wynne Jones, Lucy M. Boston, Kenneth Oppel, Wendelin van Draanen, Carole Wilkinson . . . to name a few.

What keeps you going when you feel like giving up?

The writing itself. Publication can only happen if there’s material there—and the material is what I fell in love with first. I enjoy working with words.

If you could choose to live any place on the planet, where would it be?

I’m not sure . . . I’d say the world from my novel(s), but that’s not one of the options! Maybe Japan. Or someplace in Canada. Or Australia.

Describe your fantasy writing space?

A large library room with tall bookshelves filled with old (and new!) books and high, airy windows, with a roaring fireplace at one end. There would be lots of cozy chairs and couches scattered across the room, and it would be winter outside—the room would look out on a pristine, white, mountainous vista.

(LOL. Okay, so I’m not going to be writing in a place like that anytime soon.)

What obstacles have you overcome in order to keep writing?

Time and my own unwillingness. Much as I love getting into the flow of writing, sometimes there are days when I’d just rather work on something else, read, blog, anything other than write.

Hmmm . . . I had to think about this one. Though it wasn’t given to me directly, one phrase I remember well is “shut up and write”. :P And I find it is true—there are so many ways in which I manage to talk (or complain) about my writing, instead of actually getting into the nitty-gritty and trying to solve the problem.

What do you like to keep in mind while drafting a story?

1. Any typing errors, grammar problems, plot holes, character issues, and other pitfalls can be fixed later in rewrites/revisions. 2. Write down everything that comes to mind, since #1 allows for room to explore. 3. If the story fizzles, that’s okay. Not every idea is going to pan out as well as it was imagined in that first burst of inspiration.

How will you celebrate the publication of your first book?

Hopefully by writing a second book to be published. :) All right, that’s not much fun . . . If (when!) it happens, I’ll probably scream and shout and jump up and down, and then invite everyone I know to some kind of impromptu celebration.

The Most Interesting Thing--Writing Through the Blues

Yep. Me and Sting. But sometimes, particularly in autumn, the sadness presents a daunting challenge to my writing, to my creativity. The early morning light disappears, the air chills, the garden dies, and difficult memories threaten to drag me down into a dark, gloomy, unproductive place.

Any of you ever been there? If so, you have my sympathy.

This week I've been thinking hard about what helps me write through the deep blues. Here's my list:

L.S has been a faithful, hardworking part of the #wipmadness group for quite some time. It's my pleasure to introduce you to this encouraging partner:

What resources have you found most helpful on your writing path?

I would have to say I get quite a bit from my local writing conference: the Surrey International Writer’s Conference.

And this past year and a half, I’ve been an active commenter at Magical Words, a group blog of fantasy authors who talk about writing specifically for the Fantasy genre. I’ve found it invaluable, and the community that has sprung up around these posts has been so fantastic that this past June, I flew across the continent from Vancouver to Charlotte, North Carolina to attend the science fiction and fantasy convention that they all gather at. A lot of us did—but that just says what an amazing community it’s become.

What’s the most encouraging thing you’ve experienced along the way?

Hands down, Magical Words. Another awesome thing about the site (yes, call me a MW Minion) is that the authors usually respond to comments. They’re helpful and encouraging.

But in general, I’ve been lucky to get to know a few authors, and they’ve been encouraging, too.

Favorite children’s books? Authors?

Picture books: Cross-Country Cat by Mary Calhoun, Where’s My Cow by Terry Pratchett (oh wait, that might not be for children)

Children’s novels: Anything by Roald Dahl (The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar is my favorite), Betty Ren Wright’s books about ghosts, and Patricia C. Wrede’s DEALING WITH DRAGONS series.

The YA books that made me realize I wanted to write, that were a formative part of my later childhood? Tamora Pierce’s Song of the Lioness.

My absolute favorite book though, also YA, is Robin McKinley’s The Blue Sword. Absolutely wonderful.

What keeps you going when you feel like giving up?

Community. The Internet and my in-person writing group have been great sources for that.

My husband, who also writes, is my sounding board and my rock for when life gets crazy and doubts threaten to set in. He’s supportive and he understands why this is important to me.

Another thing that makes me keep going is reading good books. When I read a novel that makes my heart sing, it reminds me why I write. Most recently: Tanya Huff’s The Enchantment Emporium, and Discord’s Apple by Carrie Vaughn.

If you could choose to live any place on the planet, where would it be?

Honestly, there are so many places in the world I’d love to visit. But silly as it may sound, I love living in Greater Vancouver. As for a specific place, I wouldn’t mind somewhere on the North Shore, but that’s because I love being out in nature, and one of my favorite places in the world is Lynn Canyon Park.

Describe your fantasy writing space?

I can’t answer that question because I find that writing space—I tend to think of it as sacred writing space—is something I have to create. I do all of my creative writing on my laptop, which I can take with me everywhere. I also require a beverage (preferably water, but hot chocolate and tea are also lovely), headphones to minimize distractions, and time enough to write (preferably at least an hour). And then I’m in the zone to write, wherever that writing occurs.

What obstacles have you overcome in order to keep writing?

Learning to minimize distractions. Pushing myself to get in writing time even when things in my life are crazy. Making time to write even though sometimes I come home exhausted from my day job, which I love but which involves editing and much e-mail, and therefore many, many non-writing words.

What one word describes your writing process?

Puzzler.

What do you appreciate the most about being part of the children’s writers community?

I like the energy.

Best writing advice you’ve been given?

Butt in chair.

What do you like to keep in mind while drafting a story?

My intent—the story I want to tell. Plots may not spring from my head fully formed, and Point A may slightly shift, but when I start a story, I generally have a main character, a mission, and a Point B.

How will you celebrate the publication of your first book?

Probably with a small gathering of friends at my place. Complete with Twitter party!

What the Imago?

Felicity clutched the pencils and scribbled back and forth, dulling the lead so she’d be able to fill in the bubbles faster. Her stomach rumbled. Probably shouldn’t have had those extra shots in her vanilla soy latté.

Kids filed in like cows to the slaughter house. At least she hadn’t arrived late like in all those nightmares. Why did her whole future have to hang on one ridiculous test?

“Don’t I know you?” Devon Fagan slid into the seat next to her and gave that cocky grin, the one that melted the hearts of every girl in her junior class. Sweet synchronicity!

Felicity’s stomach sounded another warning. She wished she’d checked her teeth in the mirror after those double-fudge brownies. Wiping her palms on her plaid skirt, she gurgled out some incoherent response.

Devon leaned over and ran a finger along her arm. “Bet you know all the answers.”

She jerked her arm back.

The test administrator handed out the booklets and gave instructions.

When the timer started, Felicity scanned the first page. What were these words? Miasma? Lacuna? Oscitate? What the Imago?

The pressure in her stomach mounted. Before she could excuse herself, it erupted.

I must not be grown up yet, because somehow I've gotten myself involved in a childhood game of tag. This week I've been tagged twice. Thanks Heather McCorckle over at Critique Sisters Corner and Barbara McDowell.

This means I will now bore, I mean, thrill you, my faithful followers, with ten things you surely don't need to know about me. For everyone's sake, I'm keeping this sharing of personal information in the vein of writing.

Here they are, in no particular order:

#1 I can't write metaphors or similes to save my life. Clichés? No problem.

#2 While querying my first novel, I heard again and again that a similar novel had recently sold. This year ANNA AND THE FRENCH KISS hit the shelves and well, need I say more?

#3 On April 17th, 2007, the day I made the conscious decision to write, I bought my first computer, a $100 vintage Mac Clamshell. Bertie survived baptism by cappuccino and chamomile tea, but last February, while I was away on vacation and under deadline, she breathed her last. May she RIP. ***sniffle***

#4 Most days I write in bed, but my best writing happens from the passenger seat on road trips.

#5 While writing, I take frequent twitter breaks. (see above) Do you see the connection, or rather the lack of connection?

#6 True story. I once found myself without a book and resorted to reading the phone directory. In my defense, the thing had pithy little sayings and famous quotations on every other page!

#7 My Persian cat snores, chews on his toenails, and insists on being within inches of me whenever I'm writing.

#8 My body can't handle stimulants, which means no caffeine or sugar. And yes, that means no chocolate. As a writer, this is catastrophic, so occasionally I cheat. Lately I've been allowing myself one gummy worm per writing session. #livingontheedge

#9 I write six days a week, but Sundays are computer and technology free. Books are fair game, though. One more reason I do not own an eReader.

#10 Connecting with all you awesome writers makes me very, very happy.

Author Interview--CJ Omololu

DIRTY LITTLE SECRETS was far and away my most memorable read of 2010. Not only does the story still haunt me, but I also credit this book with helping me work out a difficult problem in my own YA novel.

So imagine my surprise while I was out to dinner after the SCBWI conference in LA last month and found myself face-to-face with the author whose work I so admire. After a moment of fan-girling, I asked if she'd be willing to be interviewed here and guess what? Here she is. Thanks, CJ!

On Writing:

Favorite thing about writing a first draft: Favorite thing? Hmm. Typing ‘The End’.

Best thing about writing for kids and/or teens: When I get feedback from a reader saying that one of my characters made them think about things in a different way.

If I could have two dream careers, I’d be an author and a: World class singer. I can’t sing at all though, so I’ll stick with what I don’t stink at. Is that a dangling something on the end of that sentence? That’s why I didn’t put down ‘copyeditor’.

On Life:

If I could snap my fingers and solve one of the problems here on earth, it would be: Climate change because it affects everything else. There’s actually a thread about that in my new books.

One question I wish I had a definitive answer to: Am I messing up my kids?

Best thing about being a teenager: Everything is on the verge of change.

Worst thing about being a teenager: Everything is on the verge of change.

Most memorable teen moment: First kiss. Frank Perry at the elementary school playground on the first day of summer. Sigh.

One thing I’d like to say to my teen self: You’ll stop growing soon.

A quote I live by: "Writing is like driving a car at night. You can only see as far as your headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way."-- E.L. Doctorow.

My dream vacation: A huge road trip all over the country. (In a Prius – see answer above.)

In My Perfect World…

Everyone would get dinner out and a babysitter at least once a week.

There would be an abundance of time and Reese’s peanut butter cups.

No one would be deprived of coffee.

Every child would have a book they love.

No one would ever feel excluded.

Health care would be free for everyone.

What resources have you found most helpful on your writing path?

The best self-help book I found so far is “Writing Fiction for Dummies” by Randy Ingermanson & Peter Economy. Writers' blogs have been a treasure trove of information. Web-casts have also been informational.

What’s the most encouraging thing you’ve experienced along the way?

The first big help I had from a writing community was with NaNoWriMo. The folks organizing and taking part in the program were very positive. Since then, conversations with writers on Twitter have been supportive. Taking part in programs like Row80 has given me the push I need to keep moving with my writing.

Favorite children’s books? Authors?

My favorite book as a kid was Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson.

What keeps you going when you feel like giving up?

I don't like leaving things unfinished. I've had times where I get mad or frustrated with writing projects, and I have to walk away. But, so far, I've always come back to them because I need to see them completed.

That and the support and encouragement from the family and friends who know of my hobby. They're good at keeping tabs on me.

If you could choose to live any place on the planet, where would it be?

I would be one of those people with two homes. One for the summers in upstate New York near the lakes. A small cottage in the country or tiny town. The second would be on the beaches of South Padre Island in Texas. For the winters, of course. The problem would be shipping my Jeep back and forth between the two ...

Describe your fantasy writing space?

I've discovered the beauty of a massive monitor, so that would be a given. I need a stack of post-its for quick thoughts. There would probably be a mini fridge and microwave within reach. Endless supply of iced tea and V8 Splash. Music. Lots and lots of music. Oh, and an air-fresher to make it smell like Starbucks.

What obstacles have you overcome in order to keep writing?

My biggest obstacle is myself. While I said earlier that I don't like to leave things unfinished, I am my own worst enemy when it comes to writing. I can easily convince myself that I am wasting my time and to hide my work away for no one to see. I have called it quits three times. In those three times, I deleted and threw out every word I had written. I some how come back to it and start over. Now I have my work saved in multiple places and I would probably exhaust myself before I could manage to delete it all.

What one word describes your writing process?

Constant

What do you appreciate the most about being part of the writers community?

I am reminded that I am not the only one out there working to get a story out of my head. Every writer out there knows the ups and downs of the writing, rewriting, editing, critiquing and submitting process. Always some one there to celebrate with and vent to.

Best writing advice you’ve been given?

Don't look back at what you've written. Once you have a segment finished, move on. Breathe and take some time before you look it over. You have to be removed to be able to see where to make improvements.

What do you like to keep in mind while drafting a story?

I have to remind myself that it is only a draft. I shouldn't expect it to be perfect the first time around. The goal is to build the base of the manuscript. Don't sweat the little things.

How will you celebrate the publication of your first book?

Probably something small and quiet. Somewhere along the lines of sitting at the corner table in the local coffee shop with a few friends and family.

So if you missed Wednesday's post and you're an MG or YA writer, I strongly recommend you scoot over to our BWB Blog Contest and leave a comment as soon as possible. Now that we've taken care of that, let me start by reminding all of you that I'm a technology idiot. Fact is, if it weren't for my tech-savvy DH, I probably wouldn't have a blog, an email account, or a functioning computer. I'm serious.

So when a friend mentioned something she'd discovered in her blog stats, I gave her that head-cocked-puppy-look, "Blog stats?" At that point, I didn't even know my blog had followers. Here's what she has to say about her writing journey. Please feel free to leave a comment and show her some writerly love and support. What resources have you found most helpful on your writing path?
Being a member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) has been my number one resource. I receive information, helpful tips, and links on a weekly basis from my local chapter. Even though my main focus in writing centers around children's picture books, Middle Grade and YA, Stephen King's book, On Writing: A Memoir on the Craft, was one of the most profound writing books I've ever read. I'm also a huge fan of Writer's Digest magazine. (And, I love my hugemongo Thesaurus.)

What’s the most encouraging thing you’ve experienced along the way?
The day I met Charlaine Harris, author of the Sookie Stackhouse novels. There were hundreds and hundreds of fans there to see her read and sign books. She was so humble, and took the extra time to greet each and every fan with a smile, signed all of their books, and chatted while doing so. I asked her what advice she would give a struggling writer, and she said, "Keep on writing, and don't give up." Therefore, I haven't.

Favorite children’s books? Authors?
Ribsy by Beverly Cleary is my ultimate favorite. I still have my first copy I got in 1978. I loved all of the Cleary books. And, in no particular order: Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret by Judy Blume, Tiger Eyes by Judy Blume, Charlotte's Web by E.B. White, and as an early teen, I began reading (sneaking) Dean Koontz and Stephen King books.

What keeps you going when you feel like giving up?
I WANT to write books. There's nothing else on this planet I want more. I don't want to have to come back (to earth), again, because I refused to listen to my dreams.

If you could choose to live any place on the planet, where would it be?
Ireland. My father's kinfolk were Irish. Besides, I would be able kiss the Blarney stone daily. They say you'll have the "gift to gab" or "tell a great story," if you kiss the stone. Besides, it's a magical place, and I think fairies really do exist there.

Describe your fantasy writing space?
A wobbly table, in a crowded airport, Grande Cafe Misto to my right, a thesaurus to my left, and a flood of people to watch.

What obstacles have you overcome in order to keep writing?
At first, it was the doubters in my life. "You want to do what?" "Quit your day job and become a writer?" "She must be going through a mid-life crisis." I had to learn to tune out these wicked comments.
Also, a low self-esteem is a writer's worst enemy. Making the time to write is also a huge obstacle.

What one word describes your writing process?
Unpredictable.

What do you appreciate the most about being part of the children’s writers' community?
Sharing experiences and information with other writers.

Best writing advice you’ve been given?
Keep on writing, and don't give up.

What do you like to keep in mind while drafting a story?
Who is my main protagonist? What does he or she want? And, what obstacle(s) are in the way? Keeping my focus on my character seems to carry the story, shoving it in the direction(s) it needs to go, in order to come to a satisfying end.

How will you celebrate the publication of your first book?
After I inhale the sweet scent of the pages of my published book, I will take a well-deserved vacation (to Ireland!).

The Most Interesting Thing--Mustering Courage

The most interesting thing I've learned this week is that to be a writer, one has to be tremendously brave. Posting Wednesday's Flash Fiction piece took more courage than I ever imagined I could muster.

A lovely friend of mine, who is a musician and fine artist, once explained that "sharing one's art is like undressing in front of a group of strangers and asking them what they think."

That pretty much sums it up for me. So why do I share my writing? One thing that emboldens me to submit my work, is the belief that there's someone out there who needs to read it.

Partner on the Path: Ripley Patton

For all my new followers and campaigners: If you've browsed this blog, you've probably noticed this series of interviews called "Partners on the Path". Now that I'm finished hosting WIPMADNESS on Mondays, I'm back to this regular feature that highlights the journey and wisdom of fellow writers on their path to publication. Today I feature Ripley Patton, who is in the middle of a huge move. We hope it's going well for her.

What resources have you found most helpful on your writing path?

Probably the biggest, best resource has been other writers, and that has been somewhat difficult to find in a small island nation like New Zealand. There is no local or national association for YA writers here, so that means the internet has been about the only way for me to hook up with that community (That and starting my own writer's association, SpecFicNZ, in 2010). And finally, I can't forget the amazing resource my kids are. Having two teens makes having current content that much easier.

What’s the most encouraging thing you’ve experienced along the way?

Winning a Sir Julius Vogel Award for Best Short Story 2009 was pretty awesome. Technically, I tied for the award with my friend Grant Stone, but we don't have to mention that. That win also ties with sitting on an author's panel with Juliet Marillier on myths and fairy tales in fiction, and having her actually be interested in what I was saying. She also told me one of my short stories was great.

Favorite children’s books? Authors?

Anything by Dr. Suess. As a kid I read lots of fairy tales, myths and legends, my favorite probably being The Seven Chinese Brothers. Anything by Madeleine L'Engle, Ursula K. LeGuin, Anne McCaffrey, Octavia Butler, Lois McMaster Bujold, Jane Yolen, Juliet Marillier (who is from New Zealand, by the way). Dr. Suess is the only guy I allow on my list. What keeps you going when you feel like giving up? My husband, and kids and friends who believe in my writing on the rare occasions I don't. Oh, and a passionate love of story.

If you could choose to live any place on the planet, where would it be?

This question always cracks me up. In this global day and age, we actually can choose to live any place on the planet (except perhaps at the bottom of the ocean- only Sponge Bob scores that). Having packed my family up and moved to New Zealand, this really isn't a hypothetical question for me anymore. So, my answer is- for now, right where I am. New Zealand is very inspirational. Later, probably somewhere along the Mediterranean. Perhaps Greece. I find I very much like island living.

Describe your fantasy writing space?

If I had my druthers (whatever those are) I'd love to have my own private library with full floor to ceiling bookshelves, big comfy chairs and couches in various reading nooks, and a day bed near a sunny window because I love to write in bed.

What obstacles have you overcome in order to keep writing?

First, immigrating to a completely new country with two young children was challenging, but then I put that on myself. Living just on my husband's income for the last six years while I carve out this writing career thing has been hard. And in the last year my city, Christchurch, has been devastated by a series of large earthquakes. Writing between aftershocks (there have been over 7,000 of them) and constantly worrying about the safety of my family made writing my first YA novel. Ghosthand, extra challenging, especially when our first house lost a wall and we had to move in under 24 hours.

What one word describes your writing process?

Organic. I try not to force anything. I try to respect the natural ebb and flow of my creativity and not piss the muses off too much.

What do you appreciate the most about being part of the children’s writers community?

Freedom. There is so much less worry about genre and pigeon-holing in the YA and children's communities. Look at a YA library shelf- fantasy mixed with literary, mixed with adventure, mixed with mystery, mixed with pretty much anything you can imagine. We can color outside the lines. And fresh voice. Young people always have a fresh voice, which means we have to as well.

Best writing advice you’ve been given?

How can I not approach such other worlds with joy? - Jane Yolen. My much less poetic translation- Have fun! Dont' be such a poopy pants about writing. What do you like to keep in mind while drafting a story? The story. For me it's all about story. When I see people chopping the beauty that is story into little, bloody, analytical bits, it makes me want to vomit. To me, that's horror writing.

How will you celebrate the publication of your first book?

I believe I shall have a rather large party. And shorty thereafter, celebrate by writing another book.

The Most Interesting Thing--Something's Gotta Give

So last week I joined Rachael Harrie's #writecampaign, right? Maybe some of you did, too. So the number of posts in my Google Reader has quadrupled and I find myself buried in blog reading. That's not a bad thing, but adding one more thing to my crammed life caused something to fall by the wayside. Not my writing. No, that would be sinful. What's gone away is my ability to keep up with my TBR pile. My fiction addiction. My raison d'être. I read books therefore I am.

So tomorrow the television is going away. Not that I watch much, but that box can suck me in with its super powered vacuum hose then spit me out an hour later wondering what happened. I figure I'll save myself at least five extra hours a week.

So what have you done to buy out extra time? Any suggestions?

Welcome to the last three days of the month. For those of you who set writing goals at the beginning of August, how are you doing? For new followers, welcome and feel free to join in on the madness.

The excitement of selling our house, planning the move, then having hope dashed to pieces, kind of threw me into a frenzy this past week, but I've been writing through it. The toughest thing, as I blogged about on Friday, has been my reluctance to end the story. I have one more big climatic scene to write, but I'm dragging my feet to get to it. I'm at 16K of my 20K goal for the month.

Next month our WIPMADNESS host will be Jaye Robin Brown. I believe she'll be posting this Friday, so if you'd like to join in on the fun, be sure to check in with a new set of goals for September.

The Most Interesting Thing I Learned This Week--Endings Hurt

Bellingham Bay at the End of the Day

A warm welcome to all the new readers here, and "hi" to the regulars. Fridays are the day I talk about the most interesting thing I've learned about writing during the week. Or something I'm struggling with. This week it's endings. A struggle.

It's been a while since I've written the end of a story and even though it's very satisfying to finish a draft, somehow I forgot how difficult it is to let go. It's like when I'm devouring a fabulous book and I get to the last chapter and force myself to slow down so I can savor it, make those last bites last a little longer.

Right now I'm about three scenes from the end of my historical YA, and though I'm eager to revise this one, the words are coming out painfully slow.

Why am I reluctant to finish this story? Because it hurts to walk away from these characters, not knowing what will happen to them when I write THE END. Because this story doesn't end for a long time. And though Mr. Welles is right and I'm stopping the story in a happy place, I know that worse times lie ahead for these kids. Some of them may not survive. I'm going to miss them.

P. J. Hoover first fell in love with Greek mythology in sixth grade thanks to the book Mythology by Edith Hamilton. After a fifteen year bout as an electrical engineer designing computer chips for a living, P. J. decided to take her own stab at mythology and started writing books for kids and teens. P. J. is also a member of THE TEXAS SWEETHEARTS & SCOUNDRELS. When not writing, P. J. spends time with her husband and two kids and enjoys practicing Kung Fu, solving Rubik's cubes, and watching Star Trek. The third chapter. The voice seems to really start developing and feeling natural around this point. Before that it’s sort of a struggle with backstory and a shaky voice. And at the third chapter, I still love the story.

Fan mail. There is nothing better! Tell me you love my book, and I’ll have a smile on my face for the rest of the day.

Okay, now that I've gotten that off my chest, I can turn my attention to the more important stuff, like all the progress that I've heard about on the WIPs this week. From what I can tell, there's a whole lot of writing going on in our group. How's your week been? Chaotic? If so, you're in good company.

Staying focused while in the midst of a move is going to be my biggest challenge. Right now, I'm 7500 words away from reaching my 20K goal for August. Yesterday I read this post from Laurie Halse Anderson about staying calm in the center of chaos. Seems appropriate. I'm going to do my best to keep up my early morning writing routine. We'll see what happens.

The Most Interesting Thing--Donna Jo Napoli Made Me Cry

If you'd like to know why that Keynote, "How Writing about Terrible Things Makes Your Reader a Better Person" made me cry, keep reading.

Just for the record, I can count on one hand the number of times I've shed tears in the past twenty years. Go ahead and analyze that all you want, but the point is that I rarely cry. So what did this spunky author say that opened the floodgates of my dammed up heart? Without knowing it, she talked about my novel, passionately putting into words the essence of why I wrote a story titled WHY I TOLD, a story that earned me the 2009 SCBWI Work-In-Progress Grant for A Contemporary Novel.

Here's what she said:

"Unprotected children, because of family problems, don't talk out of a sense of loyalty, because they feel alone, guilty, unworthy. Then they meet that person in a book and realize they're not alone, it's not their fault, that bad things happen to good people. Children don't have the power to change their world. These books help them to be hopeful, introduce them to those who managed to survive."

This was the point in the talk in which I started asking everyone around me for kleenex (which, by the way, no one had). Why did these words rip me wide open?

Because until I wrote this book, I didn't realize that (A) the majority of abused children never tell.

Because until I wrote this book and put it out there for others to read, I never realized (B) how few people truly understand an abused child's reasons for silence.

These two facts (A & B) make me very, very, very sad.

Just at the moment when I needed to hear it, Donna Jo Napoli touched my heart by reminding me why I write about terrible things.

Sometimes, it's good to cry.

Oh boy! What a great question!

Describe your writing process for Paradise 21. How was it different from any of your other projects?

With Paradise 21, I let myself go crazy. No inhibitions. No worrying about critics, what my mom would think, or the proper way to write a science fiction novel. I just sat down and let it fly. I had fun. I wanted sandworms, pirates, aliens, spaceships; everything I’d enjoy in a space opera.

Sometimes if you let go, you find the best material because it comes right from your heart.

If you could create a world, then live in it for the rest of your life, what would it be like? Describe that world.

Really? You want the truth?

Okay, here it goes…

My perfect world would have lots of unicorns and magic. (Maybe some elves) I’d get to play first chair flute in an orchestra with all kinds of solos and no competition. There would be no wars, and everyone would respect each other. The kindest people would get the most recognition.

Describe your path to publication in one word:

Mucho-typing. (Like until my fingers almost fell off) I just kept writing books until one caught attention.

Do you find any similarities between writing books and playing music?

A sentence is much like a musical phrase. The words must have a rhythm and flow, and each novel must have a climatic moment, like a musical composition. If the music has no emotion, than no one cares. If you can infuse the words and characters with emotion, then you’ve got yourself an interesting read.

If you could choose a third career (besides author and flutist) what would it be?

Oh my, I’ve already chosen two! Well, if I could go back, I would be an environmentalist and try to save the natural world. I’m not very good at science, though, so I’m not sure I’d get very far.

The last thing I’d want to be is an astronaut, because flying in space scares the heebeegeebees out of me!

Do you have a favorite word?

Diaphonous….

Most respected books or authors?

I love Tad Williams and his Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn series, and his Otherland series. Patricia Mckillip has written my favorite book of all time: Winter Rose. I also enjoyed her science fiction book, Fool’s Run.

I also want to talk about one of my critique partners, Cherie Reich, and her ebook: Once Upon A December Nightmare. I love this story! It’s so scary, it makes me not want to read it in the dark! Cherie and I have grown together as authors, and I respect her writing so much because I was there through the tears and the joy.

More Madness-Week 3 Check-In

Have we been busy? I know I have. Last week I had the privilege of being stuck home in bed with a nasty cold and I took the opportunity to write like a madwoman, making up for lost time. I've noticed there hasn't been much #wipmadness activity on Twitter which could mean either of two things:

(A) We are so busy writing, we haven't had time to fart around on the Internet.

(B) Life has been so busy, we haven't had time to write or fart around on the Internet.

I'm hoping for most of us, it's been A, and if it's been B, I hope things are calming down.

Today we reach the halfway mark of the month and I am a few hundred words short of 10K, half of my 20K goal for August. With the obstacles that have come up, I am quite happy with where I am.

So how are all of you doing? Are you busy writing or is life keeping you running around like an ant? If you're discouraged, try reevaluating your goals and setting something more attainable for the rest of the month. It's okay. Life happens. If you've somehow managed to get ahead of your goals, maybe you could up the ante?

Last Friday I had the privilege of sitting in on a workshop given by my favorite author. I'd like to share a smattering of the highlights from that discussion by way of a series of brief quotes. So my hard drive crashed again. Need I say more? Which means I haven't been able to write since I arrived here at the SCBWI Conference in LA. I have arthritis in my hands and fingers which makes writing longhand way too painful.

Enough whining. I'd love to share all the amazing moments of this past weekend with you, but I'm posting this from my iPod which, as you know, is a hunt-and-peck venture. What I really need right now is to hear all of your good writerly news. Next week I will share my conference highlights. I promise. So how was your week? And the beautiful blog post I prepared for you just went away. Thank you, Blogger. And my hard drive crashed again yesterday and had to be replaced. And starting right now, I am going to have a fabulous weekend with thousands of lovely children's writers and illustrators.

What is the most interesting thing I've learned this week? Technology can fail you at the most inconvenient times. But life goes on. And even if you do everything right (like backup your hard drive regularly) it does you no good if you leave the backup at home!

Okay, enough talk of computers. Today I get to go to a workshop given by Laurie Halse Anderson. That's all I'm saying.

I've read a lot of books this summer. Fact is, I've read a lot of books since I learned to read at age 4. But as much as I enjoy a good story, most are forgotten within a week or two. Sad truth.

To your left is my favorite read of the summer, a story so vivid and rich that it 's still on my mind, though I read it back in June. This debut novel is truly something special .

IT'S GOAL WEEK!

Some of you new followers may wonder what in the red rock I'm talking about. Each March, Denise Jaden hosts a writing challenge called March Madness and a group of us had so much fun, we've kept it going all summer long. You can find us on Twitter, cheering each other on using the hashtag #wipmadness.

All are welcome to join us. Just set a goal for the month of August and check back here each Monday to tell us how you're doing. We'll jump up and down and do cartwheels for you, even if you have a bad week.

So in the spirit of my favorite transcendentalist, Mr. Emerson, I am going to aim above the mark for August. Ready? I hereby do swear that I will write 20,000 words on my WIP and thereby FINISH the first draft.

If you follow me on Twitter , you may have noticed a pattern over the past couple of weeks. I write early in the morning and I spend a lot of time on Twitter early in the morning. Especially of late. Why is that? Twitter offers me a much-needed therapeutic break when my story makes me sick.

As you may already know, my current work-in-progress is set in Occupied Paris and recently, as the tension mounts, I'm experiencing visceral reactions while writing, like shaky hands, chest and stomach pain, and shortness of breath. Crazy, right? In order to cope, I leave that world and connect with my cheery morning tweeps who often make me laugh and recover my sense of well-being.

So what about you? Does your writing ever make you sick? If so, what do you do to cope? I'm not talking about the "inner critic" who makes you feel like throwing your laptop out the window, but those physical reactions that make you step away from your project and breathe into a brown paper bag. Favorite thing about writing a first draft:

I love the first draft because there are so many things about the story still to be discovered. Just in the same way that you can only read a book for the first time once, there is something about the first draft when everything is new.

Best thing about writing for kids and/or teens:

I love writing for kids/teens because everything matters so much. You haven’t had a chance to grow a thick skin from experience. When you fall in love it feels like no one has ever loved that way before, when you’re betrayed it feels like the world really is ending.

Favorite word?

Hope

One word that describes your path to publication:

Persistence

If I could have two dream careers, I’d be an author and a:

Cupcake taster.

On Life:

If I could snap my fingers and solve one of the problems here on earth, it would be:

Wow. I wish this would really work. I’d have lots of things I’d take care of with a snap. If I can only fix one thing then I would make sure every child had access to a loving home with people in their lives to encourage them to reach for their dreams.

One question I wish I had a definitive answer to:

Why people feel the need to judge other people.

Best thing about being a child:

Believing that magic is still possible. I love that kids still believe in Santa and fairies. Life might be better if we all believed in a little bit of magic.

Worst thing about being a child:

Believing that the thing under the bed really could get you.

Best thing about being a teenager:

It is the time in your life when anything is possible- you could move to Europe and start a band. You could go to college or travel. You could get married and have a family or you could live a wild single life. There are oceans of choices.

Worst thing about being a teenager:

You aren’t in control of so many things. If your parents move, you have to move. If you parents decide they want to be vegetarian then the only food in your house is tofu hotdogs.

Most memorable teen moment:

My summer after my senior year I went to a party and at some point my best friend and I split off from the group and were sitting by the water talking about how everything was about to change. In that moment I knew that even though I had no real idea what I was going to do with my life I wanted to make sure she would always be my best friend.

One sentence you’d like to share with your teen self:

Don’t worry so much, things will work out.

A quote I live by:

Carpe Diem- Seize the Day. Life is too short to watch from the sidelines.

My dream vacation:

A house by the ocean, a stack of books to read, long discussions into the night with my husband, and my dogs lounging around ready to bark a warning if there is some type of squirrel revolution.

There would be an abundance of dog bellies to rub and cupcakes.

No one would be deprived of imagination.

Partner on the Path--Amber West

This lovely writer lived with two of my closest friends, but somehow I never got to meet her. How did that happen? Now she lives on the other side of the country and I've finally been able to get to know her--online. Though most of my writing partners write for children, Amber doesn't. But she has a child. So that counts, right?

What resources have you found most helpful on your writing path?

I have to admit that I was really surprised at what a great resource Twitter is when you know how to use it. Following certain hashtags (#amwriting, #MyWANA) has led me to some great blogs and people. I've found writers that I can share and commiserate with, and the sense of community is nice, especially on those days when I never leave the house.

Youtube is great, too, when I need to get a character's voice in my head. Literally. I sometimes use actors to "play" my characters. Having their cadence and intonation in my ear helps with making dialogue real.

What’s the most encouraging thing you’ve experienced along the way?

Recently, another writer I met through an online writing group and my blog read my WIP. She is only the second person I have ever let read my work. I was so incredibly nervous and even told her, "Don't give me a crit. I'm not ready for that."

She read it and gave me a crit on the first 2500 words anyway. It helped me work a few things out, and the positive feedback she gave me had me floating for the entire weekend. I shared my work, which meant overcoming a big fear, and had positive results. Doesn't get much more encouraging than that.

Favorite children’s books? Authors?

My favorite author was probably Roald Dahl. When I "grew up" and taught at an elementary school, I read Matilda to my second graders and they loved it. A couple of them bought it at the school book fair. I was excited to pass that love on.

My mom used to buy the "Serendipity" books when I was little. They are beautifully illustrated and written, and always have a moral. I have an emotional attachment to those.

I also love Mo Willems. I owned the Pigeon books before I was even considering a child.

What keeps you going when you feel like giving up?

It's funny, I haven't hit that wall yet. Probably because I haven't entered the world of trying to get my novel published. I love the writing part. Even when a scene isn't completely free flowing, I enjoy figuring it out. The writing itself is what keeps me going.

Ask me again when I'm getting rejection letters. I'll probably be in the kitchen baking and drinking wine.

If you could choose to live any place on the planet, where would it be?

Wow. That one is really difficult. My two very best friends in the world live in Seattle. My family lives here in Florida. If I could transport all those people with me wherever I choose, then I don't know that it would matter much.

Let's say the Seychelles. Also, in this dream, I'm living off the never ending inheritance from some mystery dead relative.

Describe your fantasy writing space?

A loft. Lots of windows, comfy couches. Natural light, but not too bright. Music playing softly. Coffee shop downstairs.

In real life, the closest I've come was the apartment I lived in with the aforementioned best friends. Unfortunately, life was crazy and I didn't have time to take advantage of the writing space when I had it.

What obstacles have you overcome in order to keep writing?

The fear that comes with saying "I am a writer". The fear that people will hear that and laugh. The fear that when it comes time to publish, someone will tell me to give it up.

Lots of fear.

Fear, and a toddler.

What one word describes your writing process?

Exciting. (I never know what's going to happen next!)

Best writing advice you’ve been given?

Just write.

There is so much advice out there, sometimes too much. You end up sitting in front of your notebook or computer obsessing about which rule you just broke or are about to break. There comes a moment when you have to allow yourself to just write.

What do you like to keep in mind while drafting a story?

I've always enjoyed stories that I feel connected to. If I can't see myself, or someone I care about in the main character, even a good plot can lose me. I know that isn't the case for every one, but for me, I have to feel that the characters are people you connect to.

Even if you hate them, you hate them enough to want to see what will happen to them.

How will you celebrate the publication of your first book?

It will probably involve a vlog of me doing a really embarrassing celebratory dance. The people who have supported me along the way deserve to be amused. Even if it costs me a little dignity.

But seriously, it will probably involve a really good restaurant.

The Most Interesting Thing: Are Your Ready For a Crash?

"Back up my hard drive? How do I put it in reverse?"

Up until four months ago, I wrote from a vintage Mac G4 Clamshell who I affectionately called Bertie. Expecting a crash at any given moment, DH reminded me to back her up daily. Death came to Bertie by way of a black screen whilst I was on vacation working on a revision deadline.

When I finally stopped crying, we dashed down to the nearest Best Buy, plopped down the credit card, and within a few hours my shiny white MacBook, Bertie the Second, had me back in action.

Lured into a false sense of security, I lowered my back up vigilance.

THE MOST INTERESTING THING I LEARNED THIS WEEK?

Never, never, never forget to back up.

The good news? DH had set my books folder up with Dropbox, so I didn't lose one word. But the hard drive hadn't been backed up since May 28th. Oops.

This means I lost everything on my desktop, which is where I kept all my projects in folders.

And I lost three months of stuff in my mailboxes.

Which is another lesson learned--not all mail servers are created equal.

Comcast stores mail on server for one week.

Gmail stores everything forever.

So what's my point?

Hanging out with them and talking about writing and books we love.

Sashay? I don’t know if it’s my favorite word, but I smile when I read it. It makes me want to sashay across the room. Only I wouldn’t know how.

Partner on the Path: Mary Ann Scott

Mary Ann has been a faithful partner on my path to publication. We met while participating in her awesomeness, Denise Jaden's, March Madness earlier this year. I feel privileged to be sharing the journey together.

What resources have you found most helpful on your writing path?

When I first dove into writing for kids, I nabbed a copy of The Children’s Writer’s and Illustrator’s Market and started hunting around online for more information. Very quickly I found Verla Kay’s website and have been hooked on the Blue Boards ever since. I also joined the SCBWI and started attending conferences whenever I could afford to.

I think I have to say the most helpful resource I’ve found has been other writers. People who write for kids are very different than most authors, so much nurturing and inspiration and less of the competition you might see elsewhere. It’s an awesome group to party with!

What’s the most encouraging thing you’ve experienced along the way?
The most encouraging thing...comes in two parts. Earning a full scholarship to the Chautauqua Writer’s Workshop and working with the amazing Patricia Lee Gauch, who requested the MS we worked on, had me walking on air for the next year. And then I signed with my awesome agent, Elana Roth with the Caren Johnson Literary Agency, with that same manuscript. She is tremendous, a really hands-on agent who has truly supported my work and given me the sort of encouragment that keeps me pumped about writing.
Favorite children’s books? Authors?
Do I really have to pick favorite books? From my own youth, Judy Blume’s books, Beverly Cleary’s books, and The Witch of Blackbird Pond were favorites, but along the way I discovered 1984, I Am the Cheese, and The Illustrated Man. More recently, I’ve latched onto books like A Great and Terrible Beauty (Gemma Doyle Trilogy), and of course the Harry Potter series. But one of my true, could not live without favorites is Neil Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book.
What do you do when you feel like giving up?
When I feel like giving up, a lot of red wine and chocolate doesn’t hurt. Seriously, it’s a voice inside my head that just refuses to leave. It keeps telling me stories and crashing my self-pity parties. I’ve been there, believe me. Feeling defeated and frustrated. But I know a lot of writers say it, and it’s just the simple truth: I simply can’t not write.
If you could choose to live any place on the planet, where would it be?
If I could live anywhere on earth, it would have to a small horse farm in Ireland. I spent a year in Maynooth when I was in college and I’ve never recovered.
Describe your fantasy writing space?
My fantasy writing space is my own space, not a desk in the corner of the playroom. A real room with a door I can close and windows with a few tree branches in view. It’s far away from traffic noise and smog, but close enough to a real city that I have some connection to civilization when I need it. Non-stop tea and bickies (0 calories of course) and room to get up, stretch, and act out a scene or two without arousing the attentions of unwelcome neighbors who fear some murder or some other heinous crime is taking place. I do tend to live my writing on occasion. After 10 years, I almost have my wish.
What obstacles have you overcome in order to keep writing?
Several obstacles have cropped up over the years—poverty, a child with special needs, the death of my mother and all that followed, and an unexpected exile to the armpit of the South.
What one word describes your writing process?
Consuming
What do you appreciate the most about being part of the children’s writers community?
Children’s writers are clever and nurturing and self-effacing. They can take themselves seriously without taking themselves too seriously. So many are parents or teachers who “get” what kids need and they love that connection. They just can’t help but keep that vibe going with fellow writers. They may be angsty or wide-eyed and goofy, but they are not cynical.
Best writing advice you’ve been given?
Don’t be afraid to “go big.”
What do you like to keep in mind while drafting a story?
When I am working on a project, I sink my emotions in deep. I can’t help but ask, “how does/would she feel about that?” or “why would she react that way?” or “what do I want the reader to feel?” Anyone who knows me in person knows I truly where my emotions on my sleeve, right out there for all to see. I try to take that and figure out what my characters would do when they don’t want everyone to see how they feel. How would they show it.
How will you celebrate the publication of your first book?
It depends on how big the book deal is! My kids are expecting a trip to Disney World, but I better get it in gear or they’ll be graduating from college before we ever rub paws with Mickey...

Dio's parents were not in Turkey. They'd gone to Prague to sell a rare thunder egg. "Why are you lying?" Dio asked.

"Shut up and get in the car," Sandy said, motioning to Tony.

Dio stared at their faces. How had she not noticed? The mole under Uncle Tony's right eye had moved to the left and the dimple in Sandy's chin had disappeared.

Who were these people?

Dio turned to run, but the man posing as Uncle Tony grabbed her, putting his hand over her mouth and nose. "If you don't settle down, you'll suffocate and die, and you'll never see your parents again."

Verla Kay’s Blue Boards first and foremost – it’s like a magic genie in a bottle – ask a question and answers appear. Critique partners (*waves*). Blog surfing – lots of great links, posts, and insights out there. Books on craft – my most recent read, which I drug my feet on starting because it looked dry, was Self-Editing for Fiction Writers by Renni Browne & Dave King. Tremendously helpful for revisions! And as I’ve moved to getting serious about the industry, Twitter. It’s great to read blurbs by editors and agents. It’s also a great way to connect into this community of writers. In fact I think that’s how I met you!

What’s the most encouraging thing you’ve experienced along the way?

Awesome critique partners who tell me I’m not just blowing smoke, that maybe I do have something after all.

Favorite children’s books? Authors?

Oh Lord – that’s a tough question. How do you narrow it down?

I’ll go with things I’ve read lately – and keep in mind I’m a library girl and our library isn’t super current.

For Middle Grade, I loved the Penderwicks, Kira-Kira, and The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate. Also Indigo’s Star, a follow-up to Saffy’s Angel. I just finished Alabama Moon by Watt Key and having grown up in Mobile, Alabama – I adored that book. I loved Moon’s voice. It made me want to go mud-slinging and shoot bottles with a machine gun (neither of which I ever wanted to do before seeing it through Moon’s eyes).

For Young Adult of what I’ve read this year, I loved Graceling, The Hunger Games Trilogy, Ship Breaker, and Flash Burnout. It’s funny, I didn’t think dystopian would be my thing, but I think what draws me to it is the overarching theme of finding humanity in tough situations. I appreciate that life lesson. And I love tough girls like Katsa in Graceling. I’m writing a tough girl now.

What keeps you going when you feel like giving up?
Dogged persistence and unfettered optimism. I’ve been called a Pollyanna more than once in my life. And those little nagging people in my head who just won’t shut up until I get them down on hard drive.

If you could choose to live any place on the planet, where would it be?

Where I am now, plunked down mid-way between the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Appalachian Trail is pretty darn good, but I wouldn’t mind being about ten minutes closer to the grocery store. But you know, as long as I have books, coffee, good friends, and good dogs, you can put me just about anywhere.

Describe your fantasy writing space?

Free of dog hair. (See above – note the conundrum)

What obstacles have you overcome in order to keep writing?

Uh, kids, a full-time job teaching art, a partner who calls me (lovingly) “Book Face.” In two words – finding balance.

What one word describes your writing process?

Consistent.

What do you appreciate the most about being part of the children’s writers community?
Why people like you, of course! This is the most amazingly supportive and giving community a writer could wish for.

Best writing advice you’ve been given?

Don’t get your feelings hurt over critiques – see it as an opportunity to improve. And know your own story. Critique partners bring their own stuff to the table – learn to pluck the good from the “this has nothing to do with the story I’m telling.”

What do you like to keep in mind while drafting a story?

I outline major plot points. I know my ending. I know my MC’s arc. I do a tremendous amount of imaginary mind work, as well as drawing images, graphs, and charts of character inter-connectedness before I start writing. I know my characters pretty well at that point, just little things reveal themselves as I go. I have to ask myself “What Would MC Do?” constantly and “How does this Advance the Plot?” But overall my process is pretty intuitive once I have my path laid out concretely.

The Most Important Thing I Learned This Week: Impulsivity Is Not a Virtue

No one ever told me I was impulsive.

But earlier this week this truth hit me right between the eyes.

So I've spent the past few days reflecting on how impulsivity has adversely affected my writing life.

On impulse, I have tweeted things before thinking.

On impulse, I queried agents before my manuscript was ready.

On impulse, I have commented on blogs without proofing what I wrote.

On impulse, I have posted things on my own blog that I later had to remove.

On impulse, I sent my manuscript to editors (who requested it) before it was ready.

On impulse, I have sent emails that had to be followed up with an "oops" and an apology.

Do you see a pattern here? Most of my impulsive behavior has been the direct result of a trigger finger on the send button. What is the cure? Self-control. A deep breath. Step away from the computer. Vincent knew what he was talking about--great things are NOT done by impulse.

Anyone else struggle with this issue? Can impulsivity bring any positive things to the writer's palette?

First off, I'd like to give a warm welcome to all of you lovely people who have started following this blog in the past year. Some of you I know, others I've not yet gotten acquainted with. Thank you for taking the time to visit. I hope you are all benefiting in one way or another. I look forward to knowing you better.

Deana Barnhart is hosting a blast of a blogfest this month for all sorts of writerly types, especially for those preparing to cross that bridge from unagented to agented. Even though I crossed that bridge earlier this year, I thought the party looked like fun, so I decided to pop in for the kickoff this week.

This party's getting started with a writing question that you all are supposed to help me answer. So here is the question that is burning in my mind right now:

What is it about a story that keeps you turning the pages until you get to the last one even though it's 4 am and you need to be at work in less than 3 hours?

Partner on the Path--Stephanie Jefferson

I met Stephanie over in the Writers for Young Adults group at SheWrites. She graciously volunteered to share her writing journey. What gems of wisdom does this partner on the path have to give us? Let's find out:

What sort of books do you write?

I write young adult, but I have to confess they’re more tween than young adult. I write some middle grade, too. The Tween/YA are mostly about girl-power or stories about fitting into your own skin, learning how to create and enjoy who you are rather than who others think you should be. The middle grade, on the other hand, is most often boy focused. Those stories are often mysteries or overcoming.

What resources have you found most helpful on your writing path?

I am a voracious reader. Most of what I learned about writing is from my favorite authors. Then there’s The First Five Pages by Noah Lukeman and Self-editing for fiction Writers by Renni Browne and Dave King.

What’s the most encouraging thing you’ve experienced along the way?

That’s really a long story, but I’ll try to make it as brief as I can. When I first decided to try my hand at writing, I started with picture books. Because the text is a limited word count I thought I could crank out one a month. So I got started. Honestly, they were TERRIBLE! Every possible thing to do wrong, I did. Then I tried my hand at middle grade. That was much better. Where I had no voice for picture book, middle grade was promising. From there I moved to YA and there I found my voice. I started attending workshops and conferences with SCBWI and submitting my work for critique. The first was an agents’ day where I was told I had voice—the ever elusive voice and I had it! After that, three different editors of substantial houses told my writing is very good. Well that cinched it right then and there I am a writer.

Favorite children’s books? Authors?

Oh gosh, that’s tough to say. It changes all the time. Right now the titles are Zahrah the Windseeker; House of Scorpion; Test; Bar Code Tattoo, Feed, Double Check

As you can see, I’m a huge fan of science fiction, character driven, action stories. I also like imaginative and different fantasy.

What keeps you going when you feel like giving up?

The only thing that keeps me going is I have to remind myself why I started writing in the first place and that’s because I love story. I love reading it, watching it, telling it, and writing it. The only reason I seek publication is to be able to tell ‘story’ to more people.

My writing has received some really great feedback from professionals in the publishing industry. I pull out those letters every time I receive a “No Thank You”. I hate the word rejection and refuse to use it in connection with my writing. In truth in this industry its meaning is nebulous. Oftentimes it is not a reflection on the writing, it’s more based on what they believe they can sell a lot of, too many books of that type out there, or not sure how to classify a book that determines a publisher’s/agent’s choice. After all publishing is a business that is focused on profit. As writers, we often forget this because we’re focused of the art of story

If you could choose to live any place on the planet, where would it be?

The planet? That’s hard. There are so many places I have visited and there are still so many more to explore. I guess it really doesn’t matter a ton as long as I can have access to books to read, movies to watch, and a computer so I can write.

Describe your fantasy writing space?

My fantasy writing place…someplace on the edge of a forest with views of water, sky, trees and animals. As long as the view is interesting and I have the tools to write, it really doesn’t matter.

What obstacles have you overcome in order to keep writing?

I haven’t had to overcome all that much. I was able to retire early because of a firefighter husband who pays the bills. That and family and friends that are very supportive of my following through on a dream. But thinking about it, I would say my greatest obstacle was changing my thinking to an understanding that publishing is about business rather than art.

What one word describes your writing process?

Daydreaming

What do you appreciate the most about being part of the children’s writers’ community?

The children’s writers’ community is very open and accepting. There is not only no criticism of where my imagination takes me, they encourage me to go farther.

Best writing advice you’ve been given?

The best advice given me was to read as much as I can and to write as often as I can.

What do you like to keep in mind while drafting a story?

I always keep in mind who the main character is, what I admire about her/him, what their weaknesses are and then write the story around those to build their strengths.

How will you celebrate the publication of your first book?

I am throwing myself a huge barbeque and inviting as many of the people who helped me as I can. Then I will take a trip to some obscure place and dream up another story!

The Most Interesting Thing I Learned This Week: Sometimes People Lie

People lie. I've known that sorry truth for most of my life, but what I learned this week is that sometimes people lie accidentally. And now it's confession time.

Last week in that post about being a planter, I said I didn't outline, right? That wasn't entirely true.

Before we took off on this Monday's Plot Walk and Tree Hugging Adventure, I felt lost in my WIP, baffled as to where the story needed to go. Then I remembered a very important document I'd prepared before I started this draft. Eureka!

Waiting patiently in my WIP folder was one of my favorite writing tools, a beat sheet from Blake Snyder's fabulous screenwriting manual, SAVE THE CAT. Not exactly an outline, but a helpful plotting device with 15 structure points designed to help a writer keep the reader resonating with the story. Using this tool, writers are encouraged to start with a memorable opening image and end, logically, with a final image that's the opposite of the opening.

So beginning this week, it's time for Fun and Games in Occupied Paris.

Author Interview--Jennifer Bradbury

A few years back, I read this great book, SHIFT, and then learned the author of this fantastic debut novel would be visiting our local SCBWI network to critique our first pages. I was thrilled.

Gracious and kind, Jennifer Bradbury dispensed great advice and shortly thereafter, I submitted those pages and went on to receive a grant from SCBWI. Jennifer would never take credit, but I do believe she helped me make those pages shine.

Earlier this month, I had the pleasure of reading Jennifer's second novel, WRAPPED, a YA Historical mystery with a fun twist. I hope you will pick up and enjoy reading both of these delightful books.

On Writing:
Favorite thing about writing a first draft:

I love when it starts to pick up that momentum, and I know that the plan I’ve made is taking me in the right directions.

Best thing about writing for kids and/or teens:

Funny emails from readers.

One word that describes your path to publication:

Textbook.

I wrote a couple of not so great books, but learned a ton from both experiences. SHIFT was the third book I wrote and it turned out to be pretty good. With it I got an agent and she sold it really quickly.

If I could have two dream careers, I’d be an author and a:

If I could snap my fingers and solve one of the problems here on earth, it would be:

I should probably think globally on this one, but right now, I’d be really, really happy if my son were potty trained . . .

Getting messy.

I’m not sure there was much good about being a teenager for me.

My dream vacation:

We’re scheming about some bike touring adventures in random parts of the world when our kids get bigger. And we’d love to live overseas again at some point. I like vacations that let us sort of integrate into the part of the world where we’ve traveled. But at the moment, I’d be very, very happy to go and snorkel in Hawaii with my kids and husband.

In My Perfect World…

Everyone would get popcorn and curry at least once a week.

No one would be deprived of health care.

Every child would have tons of books and someone to read them with.

What resources have you found most helpful on your writing path?
Critique partners; friends who have been through the publishing process already; craft books (about writing and the writing life); Twitter and the amazing group of writing friends I have there; the blog world, (there is nothing like reading about writing and publishing from the industry professionals themselves); and my agent. —Her notes and editorial suggestions have taught me so much about the process of writing a book!

What’s the most encouraging thing you’ve experienced along the way?
An author friend of mine, who I respect a great deal, read my manuscript shortly after I received a very harsh and critical rejection. He suggested a few changes and willingly shared his time, despite being quite busy with writing his third novel. I will never forget his kindness and the kindnesses of others like him, who have shared their time and wisdom with me. The process of moving toward publication can be a very joyous and also a very dark journey. Having friends who’ve traveled the road ahead of me has meant the difference between a staggering, stumbling trek, and a kind shoulder to lean on as I travel.

Favorite children’s books? Authors?
Oh man. This is a hard one. I love anything that tells a story truthfully and with a strong voice, from classics like LITTLE WOMEN and THE SECRET GARDEN to new stuff like Erin Bow’s PLAIN KATE, and anything by Sharon Creech or Kate DiCamillo, (just to name a few).

What keeps you going when you feel like giving up?
The knowledge that I love to write. —Before hope of publication, before an agent, before Twitter followers or Facebook friends, I simply loved the writing life and working at my craft. And I still do.

If you could choose to live any place on the planet, where would it be?
Wherever my husband and children are—even if that happens to be the moon. Home is where the heart is, as they say, and my heart is most at home among the people I love.

Describe your fantasy writing space?
Appearance isn’t terribly important, but absence of distraction would be quite nice. Wide open windows. Clean and free of clutter. Also, there must be quick and easy access to good coffee.

What obstacles have you overcome in order to keep writing?
Parenting to two small children, moving house, full-time business ownership, and chronic depression.

What one word describes your writing process? Joyful. (This is different than happy—happy is a fleeting emotion. Joy stays regardless of circumstances).

What do you appreciate the most about being part of the children’s writers community? Knowing that I am working among people who care as deeply about telling children good stories, as I do.

Best writing advice you’ve been given?
“Keep writing. You’re closer than you think.”

What do you like to keep in mind while drafting a story?
Character motivation. I do my best to stay inside my characters’ heads, and as long as I can do that, they will often drive the story forward more effectively than I could by trying to push through the plot.

How will you celebrate the publication of your first book?
With many heartfelt thanks to those who have held me up along the way, and champagne. Lots of champagne.
